Currently, laser treatments are the only permanent method of hair removal. Traditional methods of hair removal such as shaving, tweezing, waxing, and electrolysis are painful, time consuming, and very temporary. Dr. Rivkin uses the Lumenis Diode Laser and the Palomar Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Laser Hair Removal system. Both systems are quick, effective and involve minimal discomfort.

How does laser hair removal work?

Intense light energy is sent through the top layers of the skin. The light targets and heats dark tissue; surrounding lighter tissue is unaffected. Hair follicles are darker than skin, so the light destroys the hair follicle without damaging skin cells. Our painless IPL system typically requires four to six sessions. Our minimally uncomfortable Diode Laser system will do the job in three to five sessions. You may need a touch up session after six months to remove any stray hairs and complete the process.

Who is the best candidate for laser hair removal?

People with light skin and dark hair will see the best results with the greatest ease. Darker skin requires more treatment sessions. Because the light targets darker tissue, darker skin will absorb more energy. We use less energy when treating people with darker skin to prevent damage to the skin tissue. We recommend that you stay out of the sun for a few weeks before and during your treatment period. Light hair is more difficult to remove. There is currently no technology which will effectively remove very light blonde hair, but we can remove red and light brown hair effectively. It takes a little longer, but our treatments are effective even on dark skin and light hair.

The Palomar Intense Pulsed Light system.

Dr. Rivkin has tested many different IPL systems through thousands of treatments, and has determined that the Palomar system is fast, less painful, and less prone to burn the skin than any other system.
