Reduce Your Double Chin with Kybella!

July 7, 2015

Welcoming a New Double Chin Reduction Treatment to Los Angeles!

We are excited to welcome Kybella into the suite of outstanding non surgical procedures that we offer at Westside Aesthetics. Kybella is a revolutionary new injectable treatment to reduce fat deposits under the chin. Dr. Rivkin is honored to have been selected as one of a handful of physicians nationally to be part of the Kybella faculty and he has just returned from the faculty conference in Miami. The Kybella faculty is composed of the nation’s leading injectors and is tasked with teaching other doctors how to inject Kybella safely and effectively.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a substance that is made by the liver to dissolve fat in food. Since it is something that our bodies already make, it is not recognized as foreign by the body and the danger of allergic reaction is extremely low. The FDA approved Kybella as an injectable drug for dissolving fat underneath the chin. When injected, Kybella dissolves fat preferentially, but it can also dissolve other kinds of cells, like skin and muscle. This is why the injection process is particularly careful and precise. This is also why Kybella is only being released to the most experienced injectors first. As part of this group, Dr. Rivkin will help determine best practices for the use of Kybella and will go on to teach other physicians around the country on how to inject it safely and effectively.

How do Kybella Injections Work to Eliminate a Double-Chin?

Kybella is an easy, in the office injection procedure, similar to Botox or filler injection. In order to be maximally effective, we inject Kybella over two to four sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Results are seen over several months. The session itself is relatively brief, although a bit more involved than a typical filler or Botox injection. Because Kybella has to be injected correctly in order to avoid complications, we are very particular in marking each patient and plotting out the injection pattern. Several minutes prior to injecting Kybella, we numb the area to be injected with lidocaine. The FDA studies approving Kybella reported some pain with the injection, so we want to make sure that your visit is as easy as possible. We have seen that the lidocaine injection makes the procedure completely painless.

Is there Downtime?

Yes. After the injection, the area becomes swollen for a few days. The more product that is used, the more swelling we see. Usually the swelling is moderate, not severe and gets significantly better over a few days.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Anyone who is bothered by submental fullness is a good candidate for Kybella injection. The best candidates have small fat pockets under the chin, not a big neck. Treatment of large areas with Kybella is still not recommended because of the swelling afterwards. Patients with minimal skin laxity are the best candidates. Kybella is not approved to treat skin laxity specifically, although the studies did show some skin tightening in a minority of patients. We tell patients not to rely on Kybella to tighten skin.
Dr. Rivkin is very excited to finally offer Kybella to his Los Angeles patients. For more information on Kybella, visit the procedure page here. To schedule an appointment for a complimentary consultation, please call us at 310 443 5273.
